The excitement of fishing in a village in Assam.

Most of us eat fish , but hardly few of us have the privilege to experience the fun filled and exciting activity of fishing.

To experience such an exciting activity I went to village in Assam.

Fish is one of the favorite food for the Assamese people . It is not only a usual dish in Assam, but also it’s quite commonly used in their religious feast.

Due to the availability of ponds, lots of small and big rivers across Assam, fish is easily found in those water lands . The fishing activity is as interesting as much as the taste of the fish.

Starting from the small small fish around the size of the little finger, we can see bigger fish as well in the same river or pond.

Among different fishing instruments are “Khaloi”,”Jakoi”,”posa”,”polo”,”tongi jaal” are commonly used.

“Jakoi” and “khaloi” are mostly used by woman.

But the most exciting and thrilling one is “posa”.Mostly it’s used to catch fish by aiming with their long thorns .

Even though the amount of fish are decreasing year by year in the rivers, still after the monsoon when the water levels comes down, the fishing activity is started. More than the taste of the fishes, these fishing activity is much more interesting and exciting.

Starting from kids to the adults, everybody try to enjoy that activity, no matter somebody could able to catch a fish or not. The enjoyment of making your hand dirty with the mud around the other village friends is fun filled.

Some body will put the “tongi jaal” in the water and wait for some time to come the fish over their net. On the other hand , the guy with “posa” will wait focusing constantly on a particular place with the observation of a bigger fish inside water. It’s quite chellanging.

Women usually use the “jakoi” to pull from the bottom of water to get any fish.

The more people join the activity, more exciting it becomes.

After long time once they catch enough fish, they celebrates by sharing with each other. The taste is not on the fish but on the fishing activity and getting your body dirty with mud among all the villagers.
